"I first went to New Zealand in 1975 when my friend Rodney Dahlberg was back home in Mount Manganui. New Zealanders (then anyway) didn’t seem to know (or care) that the rest of the world existed. I liked New Zealand a lot… the landscape, the friendliness of the people, and the waves. One time we surfed Matakana Island, not far off the entrance of the harbour at the Mount. It wasn’t really that good, but on this not-especially-wonderful day, there was this one, beautiful, just-about-perfect wave." - John Witzig
